Theory

Compound sentences allow you to express multiple ideas in one sentence by connecting independent clauses with conjunctions.

Key Rules:

  • Use "na" for "and" to connect similar ideas
  • Use "naye" or "bali" for "but" to show contrast
  • Use "kandi" for "also/and also"
  • Each clause can stand alone as a complete sentence

Examples:

Nalya na nanywireI ate and I drank

Nalya (I ate) + na (and) + nanywire (I drank)

Nagendera naye siijaI went but didn't arrive

Nagendera (I went) + naye (but) + siija (not arrive)

Wasomire ikitabo kandi wamanyireYou read the book and also you understood

Wasomire (you read) + ikitabo (book) + kandi (and also) + wamanyire (you understood)
